Two Original Albums on 1 CD. American pianist, arranger and composer Les Baxter (1922-1996) is considered the leading figure in the history of exotica, a style of world music influenced easy listening. In 1951, he set the foundations of the genre with his landmark Ritual of the Savage LP, for which he wrote the signature exotica song: Quiet Village. With his own orchestra, he released a number of hits including Ruby (1953), Unchained Melody (1955) and The Poor People of Paris (1956), which was a #1 hit and sold more single copies than any other recording during that decade. Unchained Melody was the first #1 million seller for Baxter, and was awarded a gold disc. The SWINGPORT Les Baxter series was created to reissue these perennial hits, many of which had never previously appeared on CD. During the 60s and 70s Baxter concentrated on movie scores, working with producers and directors like Nicholas Ray, Ingmar Bergman, and Howard Koch. Throughout his career he scored over 120 movies, and was the author of the theme song Whistle from the popular TV show Lassie. This release presents two classic Les Baxter albums from the early phase of his career: Skins! and Round the World with Les Baxter. As a bonus, haz been included a selection of single A & B sides from the same period, which showcase all of the eclecticism and sensual orchestral effects that are Baxters remarkable trademarks.
